“Ha Long Bay” by Zachariah Middleton

Try to concentrate.
You are moving, not the boat.

Redirect your fovea to a point
just above her eyes.

She will be forced to ask
what’s wrong?
by which point you will have regained
your balance.

Objectively, our speed is indeterminable.
We may be bobbing in the water
like a lump of bumblebee on the wind,
but the planet spins, flies, orbits,
the galaxy expands, shifts,
crushes itself with itself.

Speedometers are an attempt to suppress
our natural gag reflex,
but once you’ve learned the trick,
they will never work again.

Lock yourself in your cabin
so you can’t see any disgusting stars.
