“what you don’t know can’t hurt you” by Nicole Manzo

a drunk girl tells me i ‘m pretty
she won’t remember me in the morning
she has no life in her eyes
but i’ve been there before

i see her a few days later
she reassures me that she has a “loving boyfriend”
and that guy she was with was only a co-worker
i found her state of denial amusing
i’ve been there before

it’s easy to make things go away
the first step is convincing yourself
then others will follow
i would know –

an iranian girl in my class looks over at me
her smile pierces my soul
she mouths to me
you are beautiful
if only she knew
i have been there before
