“Write A Poem About Your Son” by Stephanie Cook

Words you said to me in a conversation
Turned into a conversation
That died when I asked you
what else is there to talk about?
Because you laughed at me
because I started asking what your favorites are

We could talk about anything
Words you said to me some time before
Another lifetime, I guess

To be honest I never know what to say
Or when to say it

Like

When someone tells me about the sad things
happening to them
earlier that day
But they aren’t happening anymore

or

When someone tells me the greatest things
They have had
in their experience
But they aren’t happening anymore

that’s nice or how sad

they just want equal emotion
coming out of my face

and sometimes
I wish to be always saying
every positive emotion possible
in every letter

I would give that to my son, too.
I would give that to everyone, I think.
