“anxieties over chaos and conspiracies” by Patrick Riedy

the sky’s calmer
in the countryside
earth moves slow
down there
its easy to die

then again
city wide they’re
drinkin’ turpentine
to pass the time
thinking blinking
might make it hurt

united they shuffle
from street to street
no matter what they try
redbull and vodka
eyes can’t stay awake

they’re too tired
and try to dream
a little dream
about where all the dew
goes to in the daytime

safe in brownstones
behind deadbolt
and chain locks
blood flows fast
to the back of the mind

thoughts of dying
conceal themselves
as stars
behind the dirty city sky
